About JAMSA

Dear friends,

The Jamaica Medical Students’ Association (JAMSA) is the executive body which represents over 600 medical students in the elite and prestigious Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. The mission of the Faculty of Medical Sciences is to recruit and train capable and committed students as health care professionals who will be able to meet the health needs of the people they serve, but particularly those of the Caribbean, and who will strive for professional excellence throughout their careers in a constantly changing world.

JAMSA aims to provide a medium through which we as medical students can grow and develop personally, outside of our hectic world of academics. The Association attempts to provide avenues for us to give back to our society and country, as well as opportunities to expand our knowledge and experience in the vast and dynamic world of health care.

Most of the tremendous work which JAMSA has achieved over the past five years has come through over active Standing Committees, namely SCORA, SCOPH, SCOPE, SCOME and, recently added SCORE. We have accomplished many successes over the past three years thanks to these hardworking committees and we do wish to continue in these footsteps and grow as an organization locally, regionally and internationally.

In August 2007 at the 56th IFMSA General Assembly in Canterbury, UK, Jamaica won the bid to host the 57th General Assembly in August 2008, a proud achievement by our NMO. As proud hosts of this prestigious event, we intend to ensure that our university and nation is an admired spectacle and proud showcase offering a taste of professionalism and organization. This is also a timely event as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the University of the West Indies and thus adds to the myriad of celebrations and festivities which will take place.

Let us welcome the IFMSA with open arms and introduce the warm Jamaican culture to our guests, as well as creating a wonderful atmosphere and camaraderie in the most hospitable manner. This conference will only serve to strengthen the bonds between JAMSA and IFMSA and improve the tremendous work and progress that our NMO has made and will continue to make in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Henry
